Meet the Potter

Andrew is a ceramic artist with over 40 years of experience in ceramics. He has adapted & refined the ancient technique of Raku experimenting with one of the most challenging yet rewarding forms of ceramic art: Copper Matte Raku.

Through what he fondly terms “the alchemy of pottery” Andrew makes pieces that are both functional and sculptural. No two pieces can ever be the same as every creation is shaped by the unpredictable dance of fire, smoke and air during the raku process. The result is a collection of ceramics rich in texture, colour, and character.

Raku

Raku originated in Japan in the 16th century and means enjoyment or “to bring joy” in Japanese. It is an ancient firing technique involving fire and smoke that creates the unique and unexpected colours and patterns through reduction (vs oxidation).

After being glazed and heated to over 1000°C, the piece is removed from the kiln whilst red-hot and placed on a bed of wood shavings. The fire ignites and the pot covered to form a smoky, oxygen-starved atmosphere in which the magic happens.

Caring for Raku

Handle your piece with care. With the exception of the vases, Raku will not hold water. In all cases it is not food safe. Avoid placing Raku in direct sunlight.

For cleaning, dust the pot with a soft, dry cloth or soft paintbrush. If needed, wipe lightly with a damp (not wet) cloth. Avoid soaps or abrasives as they can dull the glaze and metallic finish.
